My Game 1 Experience

With the World Series underway and watching the pregame shots of Tiger fans parading into Comerica Park with such pride and energy, my memory took me back two years, nearly to the day, to October 23, 2004. On that day, I drove down into the city of Boston to meet up with my good friend “Off the Wall” Paul as we headed off to Fenway Park for our virgin World Series experience.

From the moment you eneterd the city, you knew that all eyes were on the Red Sox. The whole city was high from the adrenaline that was still pumping through Charles River, over the Zakim Bridge, and to most parts of New England north of Southern Connecticut. There were signs around every corner; this city was alive as it has never been before.

As you approached Fenway Park, the anticipation grew. The atmosphere was part carnival with a pre-heavyweight title fight buzz. We soaked it all in (along with a few beverages of course).img_19711.jpg

The screen shot above was later taken from my DVR of the broadcast from that night’s pre-game show on Fox. If you look closley in the bottom left corner there is a bright red Red Sox ski hat (under the Amstel Light sign). That would be me!

We got into the park as soon as possible and saw a little batting practice and soaked in the scene. We pointed out the media personalities on the field (all as giddy as we were in the stands). Fenway never looked more beautiful; the grass was greener, the lights were brighter.

It really was here, the World Series had come to Boston. And I was a part of it all.

Of course they broke out the big flag and unfurled it over the Monster.

The game itself was undescribable. From Ortiz’s home run all the way through to Bellhorn’s, the crowd was thrilled to be a part of it all.

And so were Paul and I.

And of course…this sight made it all the sweeter.

Especially for Paul, who joined the celebration in the streets after the game.

It truly is an experience that I will never forget. So Tiger fans, embrace it and enjoy it while you have it!
